Difficulty Low Rated by us, not by the source.

Start around June 19, 2027 for a May 3 last frost. Too late for spring 2027 — that needed starting on June 18, 2026.

  1. Dry storage

    Duration: 180 daysTemperature: 70°F 21°C

  2. Cold moist stratification

    Duration: 90 daysTemperature: 40°F 4°C

60% here. Deno gives no length for this period; three months is his standard cycle.

  3. Warm moist stratification

    Duration: 90 daysTemperature: 70°F 21°C

A further 1%. Deno gives no length for this period; three months is his standard cycle.

  4. Cold moist stratification

    Duration: 90 daysTemperature: 40°F 4°C

Deno gives no length for this period; three months is his standard cycle.

  5. Warm moist stratification

    Temperature: 70°F 21°C Light: dark

Steps after step 2 run on after germination.

about 9 months from start to sowing. Germination time not stated; 21 days assumed.

60% germination.

60% in the first cold period after six months' dry storage at 70.

Salvia (Lamiaceae). S. moorcroftiana germ: best with seed DS 6 m at 70 in 70(59% in 2-6 d) and 40(60%)-70(1%)-40-70. Fresh seed gave a more extended germination as shown by 70(29%)-40-70(10%)-40 and 40(10%)-70(26%)-40(4%)-70(2%). Seed DS 6 m at 40 gave an intermediate behavior. The data indicates a D-70 pattern, and it is possible that longer DS would have given higher germination.

Protocol 2

DerivedN. C. Deno, 1993

Difficulty Low Rated by us, not by the source.

Start around October 1, 2026 for a May 3 last frost.

  1. Dry storage

    Duration: 180 daysTemperature: 70°F 21°C

  2. Sow and cover

    Temperature: 70°F 21°C Light: dark

about 6 months from start to sowing. Then 6 days to germinate.

59% germination in 2–6 days.

59% in under a week. Deno reads the genus as a dark-at-70 germinator.
